Number vs. Single-Line Text

Question Type

Best Used For

Number

Numeric values only.

Single-Line Text

Text responses, names, codes, or mixed text and numbers.

For example, use a Number field for "Years of Experience" but use a Single-Line Text field for an "Employee ID" such as "EMP-12345".

Best Practices

  • Use Number questions whenever only numeric values should be accepted.

  • Clearly indicate the type of number being requested.

  • Use Digits Count to prevent invalid entries and improve data consistency.

  • Include units of measurement in the Question Text when applicable (e.g., dollars, years, participants).

  • Use Help Hover Text to explain formatting requirements.

  • Consider reporting and data analysis needs when determining the appropriate digit limit.
