Configuring a Single-Line Text Question
A Single-Line Text question allows users to enter a short text response, such as a name, organization, job title, or short answer.
Adding a Single-Line Text Question
- Navigate to the desired section of your form.
- Select Add Question.
- Select Single-Line Text from the Question Type dropdown.
- Configure the available settings.
- Select Save.
Configuration Options
Question Text
The question or prompt displayed to users.
Example:
- What is your current job title?
- What is the name of your organization?
Character Count
Sets the maximum number of characters users can enter.
Example Uses:
- 50 characters for a First Name field
- 100 characters for an Organization Name field
- 250 characters for a short response
Mandatory Field
Determines whether users must complete the question before submitting.
Enabled
- Users must provide a response.
Disabled
- Users may leave the question blank.
Required for Draft Submission
Determines whether users must complete the question before saving a submission as a draft.
Enabled
- Users cannot save a draft without answering the question.
Disabled
- Users can save a draft and return later to complete the question.
Note: This option is typically used only for information that is required at the beginning of the submission process.
Required Field Message
The message displayed when a user attempts to submit without completing a required question.
Example Messages:
- This field is required.
- Please enter your organization name.
- A response is required before continuing.
Help Hover Text
Additional instructions displayed when users hover over the help icon.
Example Uses:
- Enter your legal name as it appears on government-issued identification.
- Do not include special characters.
- Maximum 100 characters.
Best Practice: Use Help Hover Text to provide clarification without cluttering the form.
Hide Question From Reviewers
Determines whether reviewers can view the question and response.
Enabled
- The question and response are hidden from reviewers.
Disabled
- Reviewers can view the question and response.
Common Uses:
- Internal tracking fields
- Administrative information
- Data not required during review
Hide Question From Submitters
Determines whether submitters can view the question.
Enabled
- The question is hidden from submitters.
Disabled
- The question is visible to submitters.
Important: When using an E-Reference question type, this setting must be enabled. E-Reference questions are intended to be completed by reference providers and should not be visible to submitters.

- E-Reference questions
- Internal administrator-only fields
- Workflow tracking information
Best Practices
- Use Single-Line Text for short responses only.
- Use Multi-Line Text for essays, descriptions, or longer answers.
- Use Help Hover Text to provide additional guidance.
- Only enable Required for Draft Submission when the information is needed immediately.
