Creating a New Matching Rule
A matching rule tells RQ how to compare one signup question on the mentor side against one singup question on the mentee side. Adding a rule doesn't score anything on its own until you also give it a weight — see Setting Rule Weights.
How to add a rule
- Go to Admin Tools > Matching Rules.
- Choose the Mentor → Mentee or Mentee → Mentor tab, depending on which direction you're building the rule for.
- Click + Add Rule in the top-right corner.
This opens the Add a Rule panel.
Filling out the Basic Rule section
- Match Type: select the direction this rule applies to.
- Rule Name: give the rule a short, recognizable name (for example, Frequency).
- Rule Description: describe what the rule is comparing, in plain language (for example, How frequently would you like to connect with your Mentor/Mentee). This helps other admins understand the rule later without having to open it.
Filling out the Question Mapping section
- Mentee Question: choose which question on the mentee's signup this rule should pull an answer from.
- Mentor Question: choose which question on the mentor's singup this rule should pull an answer from.
- Match Operator: choose how the two answers should be compared (for example, Equals or Contains).
The Match Operator determines how strict the comparison is. Use Equals when you want an exact match between the two answers, and Contains when a partial match should still count (for example, matching on one shared interest out of several selected).
Saving the rule
Click Submit to save the rule, or Cancel to discard it.
The new rule will appear in the rules table. If you haven't assigned weights yet, you can set them for all your rules at once - see Setting Rule Weights.
